We’re All in This Together
Reasons to Make the Switch to EV

By Nancy Nickerson
Our federal government might not be enacting policies to fight climate change. But we can take steps as individuals to help. Driving an electric vehicle (EV) is a great choice and one of the most effective actions we can take to reduce greenhouse gases in Maine. A growing number of Mainers are doing just that.
I bought a used EV to reduce my carbon footprint. Through the Electric Vehicle Association (EVA), I learned many other great reasons to make the switch:
1. Big Savings
Electricity is 60% cheaper than gasoline. Prices are also much more stable than volatile gas prices.
2. Lower Maintenance
EVs have fewer moving parts, require less upkeep, and save drivers an average of $1,000 to $2,000 annually on fuel and maintenance, roughly $12,000 over the lifespan of typical car ownership.
3. Easy Charging
You can plug into a regular home outlet overnight for maximum convenience.
4. Better Infrastructure
Skeptics worry about long trips, but charging networks are growing fast. A 20-minute break at a fast charger adds at least 200 miles of driving range. Plus, Efficiency Maine is actively expanding charging stations into rural areas.
5. Great Used Options
Used EVs are highly affordable right now. EVA members even get a free battery health report and a used EV guide to help shop safely.
6. Eco-Friendly Lifespan
Unlike gasoline, nearly 100% of EV battery components can be recycled and reused.
National Drive Electric Month
