New overnight parking restrictions for the majority of Peninsula residents and the Nathan Clifford neighborhood are now in effect and will be enforced with ticketing and possible towing starting June 1st.
Public Services completed the installation of the new street maintenance parking restriction signs on May 1st, and following the culmination of a 30-day grace period, enforcement will begin on June 1st.
The new parking restrictions are the result of community feedback, and reduce the number of times that residents have to move their cars. Previously, parking was restricted on one side of every street once per week. Now, parking is only restricted on one side of each street two times a month.
The new restrictions strikes a balance between service delivery needs for street maintenance and resident convenience. Current service area boundaries will remain the same. Vehicles should now be moved on either Monday (for Tuesday AM restrictions) or Tuesday (for Wednesday AM restrictions) nights depending on the area. This will enable Public Services to provide service on one side of every street in every week.
Days on which the restrictions occur will precede the day that Solid Waste and Recycling collection take place. This feature is especially beneficial in the winter months as it allows Public Services the opportunity to widen snow narrowed streets by plowing, re-plowing, and removing snow prior to rubbish collection.
The new signage reflects a time of restriction change that will run from 12:01 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. The previous signs read 11:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The hope is to avoid confusion, but many find the new signs to be more confusing since cars still have to be moved the night before the ban takes effect. In other words, whether the ban begins at 11:30 p.m. Monday night or 12:01 a.m. Tuesday morning, vehicle owners are still moving their cars Monday evening before bed.
In much of the West End new overnight parking restrictions start at 12:01 a.m. on the odd side of the street on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month (with no enforcement on the fifth Tuesday of the month). Parking will be prohibited on the even side of the street the 2nd & 4th Tuesday. Cars must be moved on Monday evening to comply.
Areas of the West End near Hadlock field, Parkside, Bayside and Nathan Clifford neighborhoods have parking restrictions on the odd side of the street on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month (but not the fifth Wednesday), from 12:01 a.m. to 7 a.m., and parking will be prohibited on the even side of the street on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday. Cars must be moved on Tuesday evening to comply.
Note that in Parkside current Thursday Daytime parking restrictions will remain unchanged.
