Bright Idea: Give climate friendly gifts!
By Marie Caspard
The holiday season is here, which also means it’s the season for gift-giving to show our love for family and friends! This can also be an opportunity to show your love for the planet with climate-friendly gifts.
Here are a few suggestions as you prepare for the holiday season.
- Consider giving something that isn’t material. It is guaranteed to not sit in a closet or wind up in the trash. This could be donations in someone’s name, tickets to shows, workshops, outdoor adventures, or other activities.

If you are going to gift something material…
- Get crafty! If you’ve been meaning to work on a skill or craft like woodworking or knitting, this is the perfect opportunity to showcase it and share it.
- Try thrifting for durable vintage pieces, especially if you’re gifting clothes, jewelry, or home goods.
- Shop local! Shorter supply chains for the products you buy often means lower transportation emissions and less waste on packaging. Here’s a website to find local goods and services in Portland, Maine: https://www.portlandbuylocal.org/.
Happy holidays to all!
