City News Briefs

The West End Neighborhood Association (WENA) board members voted at their meeting on Wednesday, February 18th to support creating a public park in Bayside on land formerly planned to be the Midtown project but now owned by the City in the vicinity of Chestnut and Somerset streets.
“This is an opportunity for neighborhood investment that will serve the public for generations to come and can’t be allowed to slip away,” observed WENA board member Rosanne Graef.
The Bayside neighborhood has fewer parks and green spaces than other downtown neighborhoods. Consider the West End, home of the Western Prom, Western Cemetery, Harbor View Memorial Park, and Reiche school grounds. Not to mention smaller neighborhood parks like Tyng-Tate and Taylor Street.
Bayside does have the Stone Street splash pad, a tiny urban park often crowded with families, especially in summer months. Also, Bayside Trail serves as a pedestrian and bicycle corridor. There is also a developer created pocket park called Daymark Park on the corner of Chestnut and Lancaster streets. Look for the picnic table by the parking garage.
WENA hopes a new park in Bayside will serve future residents in this busy and growing neighborhood.
