Many Friends in Munjoy – Jenti’s Story

MY STORY: English language learners from Portland Adult Education share their story in their own words.
My name is Jenti. My grandmother’s name was Mary. My grandfather’s name is Toroyo. They lived in South Sudan. Before, my grandfather was a pastor. My grandmother did not work.
When I came from Africa, I lived on Emery Street in a small house but I didn’t know my neighbor. I just went to school and to the laundry. Now I live in Munjoy South in a big house with two bedrooms and a kitchen, bathroom and laundry. I have many friends in Munjoy.
My wish is to change my country because the people are fighting in my country. I talked to my sister yesterday about my country and my uncle and aunt and my brother and nephew and niece. I listen to my uncle.

I go to church with my sister and friends. I work at Mercy Hospital. At home, I watch TV with my husband, Louis.
When I was young I was strong. I danced when I was young. Now I am older and my knee hurts and my hand hurts too. Sometimes I am very tired.
I want to buy a house and a car. I want to give money to help my family. I want to open a business in my country to buy African dresses. I like fashion.
The color blue makes me think of sky and ocean. Blue makes me feel relaxed. Red makes me think of fire. Red makes me feel nervous. My favorite color is green in grass. It makes me feel happy.
