During the coronavirus pandemic, Portland election officials are trying to ensure everyone, whether you want to vote absentee or in person, can do so safely.
Do you need to register?
Portland residents can register early by mailing in a Voter Registration application – often called a voter registration card – that you can download from the city’s website.
Or you may fill out your voter registration in person at the Clerk’s temporary space in the Merrill Auditorium Lobby. Don’t forget, you can also register to vote on Election Day, right at your poll! So, no excuses.
To register, you must provide proof of identity and proof of residency. A driver’s license or state identification card with a current address meets both criteria. Also, if you mail in your voter registration card, still you must send proof of identity. A photocopy of your driver’s license or other photo ID would suffice.

Vote Absentee, No Excuse Necessary
In Maine, you may request an absentee ballot without specifying a reason. Sometimes called no-excuse absentee voting, it has become especially popular as voters seek to avoid crowds at the polls.
You can call the City Clerk’s office (207-874-8677) anytime within ninety days of an election to request an absentee ballot or print the application from Secretary of State’s website. Once completed, mail the form to the City Clerk Office or fax it to 207-874-8612.
Don’t forget to sign your envelope and return your ballot to the municipal clerk no later than 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. And as another option you may return your ballot to the clerk’s temporary office in the Merrill Auditorium Lobby via the Port-Tix entrance on Myrtle Street. Do not take your ballot to your polling place to turn it in.
If you do decide to vote in person
Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. All polling locations are ADA compliant.
Polling locations will look different considering Covid-19 safety measures. This means election workers will spread out the voting booths, provide plenty of hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray, and use plexiglass barriers, face shields, and masks.
Voters are encouraged to wear a mask or cloth face covering when voting.
