The CDC recently approved Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters as well as mix-and-match vaccination. This is the official approval needed to begin administering these doses across the nation. Please refer to the information below regarding Northern Light Health’s roll out.
Booster Registration and Eligibility
Online registration for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available on the Northern Light Health vaccine scheduling tool (https://covid.northernlighthealth.org/). Community members who meet the criteria may schedule a booster appointment using the scheduling tool. If they do not have access to a smart phone or computer, they should call 207-204-8551 to make an appointment.
If you are having trouble getting an appointment at a Northern Light Health facility, visit the full list of Covid-19 vaccination sites at https://www.maine.gov/covid19/vaccines/vaccination-sites or call the Maine Covid-19 Community Vaccination Line at 1-888-445-4111.
Important Information on Eligibility
- Boosters are most beneficial for those people who are most at risk of serious illness due to health conditions.
- Boosters have only been approved for people 18 and over who originally had the Pfizer, Moderna, or the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Right now, the FDA and CDC do not recommend Covid-19 booster shots for most people 12 and over. The most important thing we can do to stop serious illness from Covid-19 is to ensure that every eligible person completes their initial vaccination series.
Anyone over the age of 18 who received Johnson and Johnson at least 2 months ago is eligible for a booster dose, especially if they are over 65 or have a higher risk for severe disease.
Mix-and-Match Vaccination
Northern Light Health is updating their scheduling system with the ability to offer mix-and-match vaccinations. Please note that mix-and-match is only available for booster shots. The initial two dose vaccine series must be with the same vaccine.
The ability to mix-and-match vaccine types will provide additional options for those that may not have tolerated their initial vaccine. Additionally, there is some evidence suggesting that patients who initially received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may experience extra benefit from receiving Moderna or Pfizer as a second dose.
