Portland Parks Offers New Tai Chi for Arthritis
The City of Portland Parks, Recreation and Facilities will offer people of all ages a new way to stay fit. Portland is one of twenty-seven park and recreation agencies across the country to receive the SHAPR award. The grant comes with funding from the National Recreation and Park Association with support from the CDC. Through this grant funding, Portland will offer a new program, Tai Chi for Arthritis, to the Portland community.
Recent studies show that the Tai Chi for Arthritis program is effective in relieving pain, improving quality of life, and preventing falls for adults with or without arthritis.
Parks and Recreation will offer the new program on Mondays and Wednesdays, September 18th through November 13th (no class on October 9th), 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., at 212 Canco Road.
Certified and trained instructors will lead the classes, which are for anyone interested in a low-impact exercise program, especially those who want to manage their chronic condition.
Portland Parks will also be collaborating with Portland Housing to offer a class at their senior housing. For more information, visit the Portland Maine Parks and Recreation website.
