Man Arrested for Peering in Windows
Portland Police arrest man for peering through windows in downtown Portland. Police had responded several times to reports of a man entering the backyard of residences on Emery, Pleasant, and State Streets and peering in windows. On the night of December 17th, 2023, police arrested 70-year-old Gary Ganem of Westbrook and charged him with violation of privacy and stalking. Portland Officers Involved in Fatal Shooting
On Sunday, December 17th, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Portland Police received a report of an aggravated assault in progress. The suspect displayed a handgun before fleeing in a vehicle prior to police arriving. Responding officers located the suspect vehicle heading south on Interstate 295.
Officers initiated a traffic stop on the southbound I-295 Exit 2 off-ramp. According to PPD, when officers attempted to communicate with 42-year-old Kyle Desmarais, he exited the vehicle and pointed a firearm at them. Officer Jacob Webster and Officer Jordin Jackson exchanged gunfire with Desmarais. Officers’ gunfire struck Desmarais. And Desmarais’s gunfire struck both officers’ police vehicles. Neither one of the officers were injured. Officers administered emergency first aid but pronounced Desmarais dead at the scene. The department placed both officers on administrative leave per protocol.
