For history lovers:
Portland Docents Class Starts in February
For the 31st consecutive year, Portland area history lovers will have a unique opportunity to do something fun for themselves and good for their community. Starting February 26th, the Portland History Collaborative will host a program of eleven classes on local history, art, and architecture, as well as guiding techniques and public speaking.
The program is called the Portland History Docents, and it’s designed to produce volunteer guides for seven area historic sites including the Victoria Mansion, the Portland Observatory, Western Cemetery, and eight others.
“Portland is really unique for making this great program available to people interested in history”, Marjorie Getz, the program’s Director, commented. “The History Docents has been recognized throughout New England for the quality of its training, not to mention just for its amazing durability and popularity,” Getz added.
“You can get involved, meet interesting people, and learn a lot about the region in which we live, while you volunteer with some of the local historic sites.”
Graduates of the program are asked to donate about six hours a month as guides at one of the historic sites sponsoring the training.
The Portland History Docents classes run on Thursday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, beginning at the Maine Irish Heritage Center in Portland on February 26th and concluding on May 7th. The cost is $50 which covers the entire program.

I think it is 11 historic sites, not seven, actually.
