Official Election Results for Question A and June 13th Portland Municipal Election
The official results for Portland’s June 13th municipal election are in. Portland voters overwhelmingly rejected Question A, “An Act to Amend Rent Control and Tenant Protections,” with 66.5% of the vote (3872 Yes / 7740 No) rejecting the proposed changes to rent control.
The Southern Maine Rental Housing Alliance (RHA), formerly known as the Southern Maine Landlord Association, advanced the citizen initiative referendum to the ballot. RHA’s proposed amendment would have eliminated rental increase limits specifically when a tenant voluntarily terminates their lease. Under the current rent control ordinance, if a tenant terminates their lease, the landlord may only increase rent by 5% of their base rent.
Also on June 13th, voters resoundingly approved the proposed school budget for another fiscal year with 75.7% approving (8811 Yes / 2428 No).
The total number of voters in this June election was 11,640 or 23.7% of Portland’s 49,168 registered voters. It is common for June elections, especially in odd years with only municipal questions on the ballot, to see a small turnout.
