PORTLAND SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION RESULTS – Nov. 7th, 2023
On Tuesday, November 7th, Portland voters decided several school board, city council, and other seats. Below find the unofficial school board and water district election results as of Wednesday, November 8th. Find city council results here.
School Board At-Large
3-year term / 2 candidates – Usira Ali 44% (10,022) / Cody Austin Sims 36% (8,202)
Usira Ali, a former student at King Middle and Portland High graduate won a seat on the Portland school board representing the entire city as an at-large member. Ali (43.6%) defeated father and community organizer Cody Austin Sims (35.7%) with almost 21% of the ballots left blank for this race. Newcomer Ali ran to advocate for increased resources for the schools, college preparedness opportunities, and improving the educational gap.
School Board District 4
3-year term / uncontested – Fatuma Noor 68% (3,237) / Blank 32% (1,536)
Fatuma Noor ran uncontested for the school board seat held by Aura Russell-Bedder, who did not seek reelection.
School Board District 5
3-year term / uncontested – Sarah Brydon 78% (3,384) / Blank 22% (963)
The current District 5 representative on the Portland Board of Education and chair of the finance committee Sarah Brydon ran unopposed for a second term. She told WEN during her campaign that she wanted to use her next term to continue the work of serving Portland’s students as well as possible.
Portland Water District (uncontested)
5-year term – Frederick McCann 72% (16,563) / Blank 28% (6,438)
Fred McCann was elected to fill a vacancy on the Portland Water District Board of Trustees in November 2022. He ran unopposed for a five-year term. He is an advocate for testing Sebago Lake for PFAS, or forever chemicals, which have not been detected in Portland’s drinking water.
