We are proud to report that The West End News – Portland’s free community newspaper since 2001 – has been selected to participate in the second cohort of Climate Ready Newsrooms.
This fellowship is a groundbreaking opportunity from the University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute. The program is designed to support local newsrooms like ours in our efforts to report on climate change. The second cohort for the fellowship focuses on ten newsrooms in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
What this means for The West End News.
Importantly, this fellowship focuses on our local newsroom — not individuals in the newsroom — and our local challenges in reporting on climate issues for the community.
The fellowship provides the training and resources needed to be “climate ready.” The goal: to produce long-term, accurate, equitable and impactful coverage.
What does the Climate Ready Newsrooms fellowship means for you, our readers?
Expect more capacity for science supported, community-focused climate and environment reporting. The fellowship is specifically tailored to the needs of local newsrooms.
