Tandem Mobility is launching Portland’s first bike share program as soon as this July. They plan to offer 150 traditional geared cruiser bikes at dedicated parking hubs across the city. In addition, electric bike enthusiasts will find access to 50 electric-assist bikes.
Bikes will be available to rent 24/7 via a smartphone app.
The program is a public-private partnership among the City of Portland, Tandem Mobility, and funding sponsors. Arriving this summer, it will be Portland’s first bikeshare program.
“We prioritize collaboration throughout our bikeshare launch process and for the lifetime of our contract with the city and sponsors. That collaboration ensures alignment between community goals and system design and results in a program that positively impacts the community,” said Tandem Mobility CEO Keli Hoyt-Rupert. “This has been a really dynamic and exciting partnership with the City of Portland and our co-founding sponsors, MaineDOT and Point32 Health. We couldn’t be more excited to see this program come to life.”
The bike share program will use a combination of sponsors and rider revenue to fund its operation. Initially, Tandem Mobility expects to operate for a three-year term. However, they will reevaluate the program as they go.
