Starting Monday, July 6th, the City will begin removing the Middle/Spring Street median (weather permitting.) Work will begin near the Nickelodeon Theater and progress in a southerly direction toward High Street. As work progresses, traffic patterns may change and lane closures will be required.
Motorists are urged to use caution, follow traffic detour signage if needed, and as always safely share the roadway with bicyclists, pedestrians, and construction workers. Access to the Cross Insurance Arena/Civic Center will be maintained at all times.
Work on the removal is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete, after which time natural gas company Unitil and the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin the streetscape and paving project expected to be underway through late fall.
The improvements on Spring Street are part of a joint project with MDOT and the City that involves adding streetscape elements, including improvements for pedestrian safety, future landscape, median section removal, vehicle access improvements and paving upgrades.
