Local residents will see a new orange truck hit the streets this January, as We Compost It! rolls out a new food scrap collection vehicle to boost organics recycling. We Compost It! will also open the gates to a new commercial composting facility this month that is co-located in Poland & Auburn.
The new processing facility is one of the largest in New England. Formerly known as Resurgam, We Compost It! has served partners in Greater Portland for three years and is expanding to a regional scale to meet growing demand. The name Resurgam is derived from the City of Portland’s motto, and the new name was adopted to represent the company’s broader geographic reach.
Food scraps from local schools, restaurants, hotels and hospitals will be transformed at the new facility into nutrient-rich compost. The compost will be used by local gardeners and landscapers to grow food and flowers. The new facility is permitted to process 1,000 tons of organics each month.
Americans currently throw away up to 40 percent of their food on average, and organic materials comprise more than 25 percent of the total waste stream in the United States.
