May Day Starts New Season at Congress Square Park
by Tony Zeli
On May 1st, Friends of Congress Square Park kicked off their event season and celebrated spring with a day of activities.
May 1st is traditionally celebrated as May Day in many countries as a springtime festival.
The May Day event was a success as the rain mostly held off. There was maypole dancing, fiddling, paper flowers and May basket making. Cupcakes were sold to benefit the Reiche PTO, and they were delicious!
The park has become a community focal point since it was almost sold to the adjacent Westin hotel in 2014. The community rallied to save the park, and shortly after a nonprofit group formed, Friends of Congress Square Park, to promote the space and provide programming.
This year’s May Day celebration was held in part to mark the start of three seasons of programming. From Spring to Fall the urban park will host everything from Sunday evening movies, to Wednesday morning Tai Chi Chih and regular dances and live music events.
