City Council At-Large
3-year term / 2 candidates – April Fournier 56% (12,935) / Bill Linnell 30% (6,841)
April Fournier defeated challenger Bill Linnell for another three-year term representing all five of the city’s districts as an at-large city councilor. Fournier won 56.2% of the vote to Linnell’s 29.7%. (Note 14% of ballots were left blank.) In unofficial results, Fournier won at every polling place except for Peaks Island, even winning a larger percentage of the vote in Linnell’s home district (3).
Fournier told WEN during her campaign that she was running for re-election because she still had more work to do and had the skills and relationships to solve the issues facing the city. Bill Linnell is owner of Cap’n Bill’s Lobster and former president of Stroudwater Village Association. He was running out of concern for the direction the city was heading.
City Council District 4
3-year term / 2 candidates – Anna Bullet 49% (2,344) / Robert Samuel Cady 35% (1,690)
Anna Bullett, Health and nutrition director at The Opportunity Alliance, defeated physician Robert Samuel Cady to represent District 4. Bullett won with just short of half of the district’s vote (49.1%) with 15% of ballots remaining unfilled. Bullett said she was running for city council to ensure a livable Portland for all, especially seniors and working families.
City Council District 5
3-year term / 2 candidates – Kate Sykes 51% (2,334) / Matt Buonopane 36% (1,627)
Writer, union member, and community activist Kate Sykes defeated banker Matt Buonopane with over half the vote (51.8%) with 12% of ballots unmarked. Sykes volunteered on issues such as clean elections and with organizations such as Progressive Portland and Maine DSA. Sykes now represents what is generally considered Portland’s most conservative and most suburban district (5).
