When I was 12, I was confident that the only people who had a larger English vocabulary than I were my mom and William F. Buckley. And yes, I was really that obnoxious. But then, I started to read Fitzgerald and Faulkner and Henry James and Edith Wharton. These writers lead me to others. I discovered that the world was filled with words I didn’t know. And books? Well, I have read a lot (even though, contrary to public opinion, librarians don’t just read books all day), and still I will never run out of great books to read by authors whose names I don’t know yet.
Somewhat to my surprise, the WENA Book Nook steered me to new writers on my very first day of volunteering there. I assumed that its offerings would be worn-out bodice rippers and James Pattersons. To find out how wrong (and obnoxious, again) I was, stop by the Book Nook in the Community Room at Reiche School, Mondays through Thursdays, 8:00 to 10.00 am. You will find just the right book. You will not need to check it out.
When you finish, either return the book to the Book Nook, or pass it along to a friend. Usually, if you discover a book that Portland Public Library or just about any other Maine library holds, you will be able to request that it be sent to the Book Nook for pickup.
